Each player starts with two cavalry, which begin on the row closest to the player, one field from each corner. The cavalry move is unusual among Aboleo pieces. When it moves, it can move to a field that is two fields horizontally and one field vertically, or two fields vertically and one field horizontally. The complete move therefore looks like the letter L. Unlike all other standard Aboleo pieces, the cavalry can ‘jump over’ all other pieces (of either color) to its destination field. It attacks an enemy piece by entering into its field.
The cavalry’s ability to “jump over” other pieces means it tends to be at its most powerful in closed positions, in contrast to that of other pieces, its movement is not obstructed. The cavalry moves alternately to light and dark squares. The cavalry unit is the only piece that can move at the beginning of the game without first moving an infantry unit.
