The infantry is the most numerous piece in the game of Aboleo, and in most circumstances, also the weakest. Each player begins a game of Aboleo with eight infantry units, one on each field of the rank immediately in front of the other pieces. Unlike the other pieces, infantry may not move backwards. Unless engaging an opposing piece, infantry units move by advancing a single field to the front. Unlike other pieces, the infantry does not attack in the same direction as it otherwise moves. An infantry unit engages opposing pieces by entering the field diagonally (flanking), one field forward and to the left or right on which an enemy piece sits.
An infantry unit that advances all the way to the opposite side of the board is elevated to another piece called a noble, at full strength. The infantry unit is immediately (before the opposing player’s next move) replaced by the new piece.
